Japanese Contemporary Pottery Almond Bowl by Hanako Nakazato
Dimensions: 2-3/4”h x 4-1/4” dia
Hanako Nakazato comes from a family of Japanese potters stretching back 14 generations. Her creative techniques and philosophy are grounded in the ceramic traditions of her hometown, Karatsu, and the teachings of her father Takashi Nakazato. While requiring a specific skill to handle, it enabled Hanako to stretch clay thin which is useful for creating a wide range of shapes and sizes. As with this piece, her creative works have a delicate undulating rim.
This stoneware almond-shaped bowl has a slivery brown/khaki slip on the piece's body with a darker brown rim. The bottom has three feet and is unglazed celebrating the clay from which it is made. The piece has her impression on the bottom of the bowl.
Condition: Excellent and as originally handmade. The bowl has solely been used as a display piece to celebrate Hanako’s unique and natural forms, although it is made to accommodate small bites and snacks, and is dishwasher safe.
