Vintage Japanese Celedon Nephrite Jade Koi Fish
Dimensions: 3-0” h x 1-1/2”w x 7-0”l
The jade from which this is made shows beautifully carved details, (head, gils, fins and tail), of the stylized Koi/Carp, which is quite expressive and shows highly skilled carving with excellent detail and nuance. The stone has a cloudy appearance with slight variations in the Celadon color. Celadon is a term for the jade green tones, also known as greenware (the term specialists now tend to use). No indication of maker.
Vintage Condition: Excellent condition, with a hard, cold, waxy feel to the overall surface. The craftsmanship is simply beautiful, with no cracks, chips or crazing. The surface does not scratch when tested.
NOTE: Because the Chinese character for fish, (yu), is pronounced the same as the Chinese character for surplus, the fish symbol is frequently used to symbolize the wish for more in the sense of good luck, good fortune, long life, children, etc. Many of the attributes of the koi symbolize several lessons and are examples of trials individuals often encounter in life. The koi fish has a powerful and energetic life force which the Asian cultures cherish and strive to possess.
